Snippets of summer and a three-berry and yogurt cake recipe
I cannot believe it has been so long since I have been here sharing… time slipped by so quickly.
Summer does that to us and I suppose I am really enjoying just taking my time, working but also just being.
Cooking and baking… and documenting it all with my camera, but perhaps I am short of words?
Seattle has had the most amazing summer and we have been enjoying it to the fullest. We even went camping in Camano Island where the fog rolled in every morning and we napped under the sun. It felt incredible.
There are berries everywhere… even in the heart of the city, so needless to say there has been a lot of baking. Simple cakes and tarts.
For breakfast, dessert and snacks.
This triple berry yogurt cake is perfect for all of the above – loaded with red and golden raspberries and white currants.
Moist, almost pudding-like as it sits in the refrigerator overnight. My favorite.
I shared the recipe over at The Little Room of Style. Hope you will try it.
I will be back soon. I have a couple of classes to announce!
Happy summer!
We’ve missed you! But it looks like you’ve been having a lovely summer. Great cake!
I have been. Thank you!
So beautiful! Loved the unique choice of berries too, I don’t think I’ve ever had those baked into a cake…
So many berries here in the Pacific Northwest… salmonberries, red and golden raspberries, bayberries, marionberries, boysenberries, huckleberries, blueberries, currants, gooseberries… So lucky!
Lovely snippets! You’ve perfectly captured the essence of summer…
This cake looks divine! Berries are just irresistible.
Cheers,
Rosa
Thank you!
I do not think you need words to describe how your summer is and life is right now. They are stunning shots. That cake is filled with such spirit and contains the essence of summer in its tender crumb. So wonderful!
I have not been feeling very inspired to write actually but it’s true one can tell a story through images. Thank you!
Oh, I love all the photos of this variety of colourful berries. Picking berries is always fun, I can’t get enough. Your cake looks very delicious. And the white cutlery is so pretty.
Yes, I love the white cutlery too. Thank you!
I am going to look at that recipe right now, it looks amazing! Beautiful pictures too, as always!
I hope you make it. Report back!
Dearest Aran,
I just moved to Seattle about 7 months ago (about the same time you did, so it’s been fun to discover all that this city has to offer through you and your posts) and I’m absolutely loving the summer here, as well. I’ve gone berry picking more than I can count and I’ve been using them in so many recipes. I actually just wrote about one of those recipes on my blog. I love your work, look forward to your posts, and would love to take a class with you someday in Seattle.
Much love,
Renee @ Nourish Your Roots
Rennee,
Small world and I love your macaroon tart with all those berries. Which ones were your favorite places to pick berries?
I will be teaching a food photography class at the Pantry at Delancey this November 24. You can see more details here. I will be announcing it soon.
Enjoy the rest of summer although it’s already looking like autumn!
Thank you so much for peeking at my blog! My favorite places so far to pick berries have been the outskirts of Discovery Park (for wild blackberries), Bill Pace Organic Blueberry Farm, Broers Farm for blackberries and Marionberries, Bybee farms for blueberries, and Biringer Farms for strawberries and raspberries.
And I just signed up for your class at The Pantry! I know how quickly classes fill up there so I grabbed it right away as soon as you mentioned it. I’m beyond excited to learn from you…it’s been a dream of mine to attend one of your classes and I know it will definitely help with my food photography on my blog. See you soon.
Thank you for the list of places! Will check them out! We love Discovery Park.
And pleased to hear you signed up for the November class. Shall meet you then!
Aran,
Looks like the class has been sold out already.
I am also a Seattleite, and I would love to be in a class taught by you. Are there any more coming up?
Are you referring to the food photography class? That seems to have spots open still… Did you try to register?
Aran,
Both the food photography and the cooking class have been sold out.
How good to have you back here!! Hope to see you in Basque!!
Sanda! When will be be there?
I will be there from 6th to 9th of September..I know you will be busy with a course but I hope you will have at least time for a coffee :-)
Oh that is in the thick if the workshop and we have so many activities planned, dinners included. But let’s talk as see if we can make it happen!
I will absolutely be making it. So, so beautiful Aran…
And please report back!
These photo are simply STUNNING! Especially the berries and currants – how gorgeous. X
They are so photogenic that is so easy to photograph them. Thank you!
These photos (and thinking about this cake) are making me very happy today. Glad to see you’ve been enjoying your summer!
Indeed! Thank you!
Aran, so glad to hear your summer has been dreamy. Wild berries always feel like such a treasured discovery, don’t they? I’d love to sit with you over a slice of your lovely cake and talk the afternoon away..
Beautiful post!
I would love that too! xo
Nice to see you back! Love all your summer pics! :)
Nice to be back :)
Aran querida,
Marisa
Gracias Marisa. Las uñas son de una amiga. Un abrazo!
So good to hear from you again. Good to hear you’re enjoying your new home! The summer in Seattle must be truly amazing.
What amazing photos. You’re so lucky to have so many lovely berries on your doorstep.
I will definitely be making this cake over the weekend. It reminds me of the cakes my grandmother used to make :)
Berries are my favorite—looks like a delicious summer!
¡Feliz verano!. Muxuak,

Beautiful pictures! Although it is kinda difficult looking at them in my windowless office….
Thanks for the perfect pictures, pure inspiration! I really hope to catch a workshop with you someday!
So glad you are enjoying Seattle! Beautiful photos. Where are the sheep and what kind are they? Best wishes!
The sheep are from our time in the Basque Country actually and they are the latxa breed, I believe.
Wow, delicious looking cake–heading over to look up the recipe now!
Aran: so nice to have you back! I have missed your posts with all their charm and warmth. How wonderful to see you settling in to lifre in the Pacific Northwest. Beautiful. As I ate my first fresh berries- ever- in Seattle , it is so great to have you focus on them here. I can still taste the sweet juices of that first blackberry! The cake looks divine . I will make it soon. Enjoy your new home. I will look forward to your next post.
Thank you very much Dena!
gorgeous photos & that cake looks awesome!
I miss my Seattle berries SO much! Any idea where to get them cheaply here in Euskadi? My hopes have been dashed, but hoping you might know of somewhere. :)
Definitely nothing like in the PNW. There is a nursery in Txorierri where we picked blueberries and currants. I cannot remember the name… Where do you live?
Maravilloso tu blog, maravillosas fotografías…
Abrazos desde Madrid
It seems like you have a very fruitful summer! Beautiful pictures and delectable foods! Eye-candy, all of them…especially the desserts!

You seem so light, uplifted, and free. Cheers to continuing in this refrain until fall arrives. <3.
A berry beautiful summer in more ways than one Aran. Golden raspberries may come and go but you can never replace those lovely moments camping with little ones. They’ll remember it forever. x
what wonderful photos! you have so many talents, thank you for sharing with us!
xx
Glad to see a new post! Is that your house/landscape? It’s absolutely gorgeous. Just one more reason for me to get off the east coast!
Aran your recipes and photos are amazing as usual but this time one other thing that caught my eye is your beautiful nail paint!!! Love.
Gorgeous summer photo essay, and what a cake! I don’t think I’ve ever had golden raspberries, or fresh currants, either. How pretty!
Itxurea ederra!!! mmm esnetan bustite egongo da… :)))
lovely summer!
Hi Aran! I just discovered your blog, and have completely fallen for it! Your photography is so, so beautiful, as is your styling! This recipe looks wonderful…I’d love to make it while entertaining in the fall, and wonder if perhaps you have any recommendations for modifying it for the autumn months (what seasonal fruit might work/not work well)? Thanks for sharing…I will definitely be back again soon! (P.S. – I blog about owning an NYC-based pop-up sandwich company with my husband and am writing weekly posts about the ins and outs of our first year in a permanent storefront [alongside recipes]…feel free to stop by sometime!
I think the cake would be really good with apples or pears and lots of spices. Thank you!
You have such beautiful photography, and this recipe looks great!
Welcome to the area! My husband and I moved here 16 years ago, and love it!!
We are on the other side of the water (The sound) from Seattle. Blackberries are like weeds over here! We love them.
Our youngest daughter and I both are allergic to gluten and she is allergic to egg.
Thanks for posting so many wonderful recipes (um and gorgeous photogrpahy) for all of us to use.
[…] Scenes of summer, as only Aran Goyoaga could capture them. […]
Ahh looks like you had such a lovely summer. That berry and yoghurt cake = awesome!

Aran, Your photos are just gorgeous and an inspiration. Thank you for sharing…. I’m sure it takes a lot of time to put these photo essays together! I have a question regarding the second photo from the top — the hands holding the berries. Do you know the name / variety of the white berries with the black flecks? A friend ate similar-looking berries in Istanbul, and we are still wondering what they are called. xoxo Kate
They are mulberries, some ripe some still green. Thank you!
I have just discovered yoghurt cake after 11 years of living in France, where it is supposed to be the most popular home made cake. I have made 3, one with half a tub of ground almonds topped with flaked almonds and a little sugar; one topped with wild bilberries, or myrtilles as the French call them, and which I found in a supermarket, the first time I’d ever seen them for sale in 11 years; and no. 3, topped with white peach slices and a few blueberries I found languishing in the freezer. They were all lovely, I think it will be my cake to make of choice, it’s so easy.

Hey this looks yummy!
I think my husband would love this recipe and he is a big cake lover!
I will cook it this weekend and let you all know who it came out.
Thanks for the awesome recipe.
