Food photography workshop with Gentl & Hyers | Lummi Island, WA August 18-21, 2017
Excited to return to Lummi Island with Gentl & Hyers this August 18-21. They will be teaching a photography workshop with a focus on reportage, food, still life and portraits. My friend Jim Henkens and I will be supporting them with our experience in food styling, photography and prop sourcing. The workshop will be hosted at Jim’s beautiful and quaint beach cottage that is full of vintage kitchenware.
You can REGISTER at Jim’s site Marine Area 7.
Here is the official description:
Marine Area 7 would like to present Andrea Gentl and Martin Hyers, who together with Aran Goyoaga, will be teaching a two-day food and travel photography workshop on Lummi Island. All students will learn about photography and food styling from the perspective of working professionals.
The workshop will focus on two types of shooting: still life and reportage. For the food still-life portion, Andrea and Martin (professionally known as Gentl & Hyers) will discuss and demonstrate: composition, natural lighting and simple editing with Capture One. Shooting while tethered to a monitor, the students will view subtle techniques and changes in real time. How to make food beautiful will be a strong focus- to which Aran Goyoaga (AKA Canelle et Vanille) will bring professional expertise.
Each student will get a chance to practice techniques using simple tools all photographers should have in their kit. Marine Area 7 will provide surfaces and props which each student will have access to use in their photos.
Story telling and editing will be a theme throughout the weekend. Along with sharing their knowledge and success with reportage, Gentl and Hyers will discuss the use of social media to bring exposure to work and have each student create social posts in order to self-promote commercially, tell a story visually and or express oneself creatively. Beautiful Lummi Island and its local farms and makers will be the background for all to create their own visual story. The class will forage for edible subject matter & meet and photograph a maker from the island. Gentl and Hyers will discuss technique & gear as well as describe how to “see photographs”. At the end of the workshop, along with the instructors, the class will partake in a short critique of one another’s work, which will inspire and inform.
You can see Andrea and Marty’s recap from the workshop we did together in 2015.
